Mexican Wedding Sponsors
In a traditional Mexican wedding, the couple who are getting married are financially sponsored by their godparents to act as sponsors, or padrinos of the wedding. Godparents act as mentors to the groom and bride throughout the whole engagement and even after the wedding. To honor their godparents, the groom and the bride give them a place in the wedding program. The sponsors of the wedding may give the couple a bible and a rosary during the wedding ceremony.
In the ceremony of a Mexican wedding, a lasso, a white ribbon or rosary is wrapped around the neck of the groom and bride to symbolically represent their union. It is also part of a Mexican wedding for a groom to give to his wife thirteen gold coins as a wedding gift. These gold coins are then blessed by the priest during the wedding ceremony. This gesture is a representation that the groom is committed to supporting his wife. When the ceremony is over, the newly-wedded couple is tossed with red beads to bring good luck; while at the wedding reception, guests come together hand-in-hand and form a heart shape around the groom and bride as the couple have their first dance.
There is also a candy container called piñata hung from the ceiling at Mexican wedding receptions. This piñata is a paper mache container that is shaped like a heart or animal and filled with candy. Children swat this piñata, and when it breaks, the candy that falls out from it is shared to the guests.
